October 7 - Joe Hill; Shura Cherkassky (The Musical Birthday Series, 2nd Annual Cycle)

Joe Hill (7 October 1879 – 19 November 1915) was a Swedish-American labor activist and songwriter.  The limerick below quotes one of his most famous songs.

Over the Hill

Joe Hill was an immigrant Swede

Who wrote songs with an activist creed,

Because “pie in the sky”

That you get when you die,

Doesn’t help with terrestrial need.

Everything Old Is New Again

Said Shura Cherkassky, “My career

Continues for year after year,

And if now, after eighty

My touch is less weighty,

My playing is just as sincere.”
