First Lady
Her playing was very well received, garnering her a reputation for a delicate tone, lyrical sense of virtuosity and operatic freedom. She was one of the first pianists to perform memorized repertoire in public, a decade ahead of Franz Liszt and Clara Schumann. - adapted from Wikipedia
Maria Szymanowska, a pianist from Poland,
Kept her performances under control and
Played them from memory, a novel new twist
Which then became standard with Schumann and Liszt.
Her nocturnes, her études, mazurkas, and such
Displayed all the charm of her delicate touch,
And folks at salons said they never before saw
A better attraction arriving from Warsaw.
But once she expired, for better or worse, her
Place in the books was as Chopin’s precursor.
