Steve Reich (b. 3 October 1936) is one of the most influential living American composers.

Continuity

“He didn’t reinvent the wheel so much as he showed us a new way to ride.”  John Adams, qtd. In Wikipedia

Reich, no longer 84,

Opened an important door,

To kinds of sound not heard before.

Though once regarded as a terror,

He’s now respected as the bearer

Of a flame so all-embracing

Some have fears of it replacing

Other modernist traditions

With its varied repetitions.

No matter how we sometimes feel

He didn't reinvent the wheel,

Instead he worked against the grain

And gave the wheel a different train.
