Christoph Graupner (13 January 1683 – 10 May 1760) was an important German composer and keyboard player.
Oops!
In 1723, after Telemann, who had been the first choice for this position, withdrew, Graupner applied for the job of Thomaskantor in Leipzig. However, after Graupner's current patron paid his past due wages in full and increased his salary, Graupner remained in his job at Darmstadt, and thus cleared the way for Bach to become the kantor in Leipzig. – adapted from Wikipedia
Committees can be dense or thick,
Their judgment can be blurred.
(Perhaps it is impolitic
To mention what occurred!)
Telemann, refined and slick,
Was whom they most preferred,
Then Graupner was their second pick,
And J. S. Bach was third.
A story that deserves a “sic”
Because it seems absurd.
