December 17 - Arthur Fiedler; Domenico Cimarosa (The Musical Birthday Series)

Arthur Fiedler (17 December 1894 – 10 July 1979) was the beloved conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra.

Popular Front

Arthur Fielder’s Boston Pops
Sometimes pulled out all the stops
With fireworks at concert ops,
And though there may have been some flops,
By and large there discs were tops
At all the better record shops.

To some the thing was infra dig,
But Arthur Fiedler was no prig,
For fifty years he did his job
And never was a high-brow snob.

Domenico Cimarosa (17 December 1749 – 11 January 1801) was one of the preeminent Italian composers of his time.

One Hit Wonder

Domenico Cimarosa
  Wrote scores by the score.
He’d rush to compose a
  New one before
The old one had been cheered.

With a decent libretto
  And music well-made,
Matrimonio Segreto
  Is sometimes still played,
          The rest have disappeared.
