By Any Other Name
On Jan. 23, 1707, he succeeded Buxtehude as organist and parish clerk; as the successful applicant, he was required to marry Buxtehude’s daughter,... a requirement declined by Mattheson and Handel. - encyclopedia.com
Johann Christian Schieferdecker,
(Of whom I’ve never heard),
Never liked to sign his name
Because it was absurd.
The name of Johann Schieferdecker
Was longer than the norm;
He often needed extra space
When filling out a form.
When Buxtehude, full of years,
Departed from this life,
Schieferdecker got the job,
And as a perk, a wife.
The many documents required
When these occasions came
Called for extra pen and ink
So he could sign his name.
