Virgil Thomson (25 November 1896 – 30 September 1989) was an American composer and music critic.

Virgil Thomson, Gertrude Stein,
Worked together, it was fine.
She wrote words with little sense,
He wrote notes with no pretense.
Gertrude, when the plot was flimsy
Lost herself in verbal whimsy;
Virgil wrote a score that purged
Any logic that emerged.
Could this duo have success?

Of charming confusion
