November 8 - Arnold Bax (The Musical Birthday Series, 2nd Annual Cycle)

Arnold Bax (8 November 1883 – 3 October 1953) was a highly regarded British composer, especially known for his orchestral music.

Bax to the Future

"When the score demands such luxuries as triple or quadruple woodwind, six horns, three or four trumpets, extra percussion and perhaps organ, it is undoubtedly throwing extra difficulties in the way of performance." --- York Bowen on Bax

The musical language of Bax

Is scored, it is said, to the max.

The woodwinds (my word!)

Are heard in a herd,

While the brass is assembled in packs.
