Giovanni Paisiello (9 May 1740 – 5 June 1816) was one of the preeminent opera composers of the Haydn-Mozart generation. His La serva padrona retains a small place in the repertoire, especially with workshops and smaller companies.

Variations on a Theme: Lesson 1

If a singer should holler or bellow

In music of G. Paisiello,

Their teacher or coach

Should nix that approach,

And remind them, “This isn’t Otello.”

Variations on a Theme: Lesson 2

In music by G. Paisiello

It’s always unseemly to bellow.

In the Classical style

One should gently beguile

With a voice that is dulcet and mellow.
