Meredith Willson (18 May 1902 – 15 June 1984) had a varied and successful career as a musician, but is best remembered for his Broadway musicals.

The premise of The Music Man,
Proclaimed by Harold Hill,
Declares that “thinking” music can
Beget artistic skill.
But woefully, that wished-for plan,
(To learn without the drill),
Has not been found since time began,
And doubtless never will.
