He didn’t write words for the drama, he
Much preferred musical comedy,
And crafted his lyrics in turn
For Hammerstein, Romberg, and Kern.

So that only fanatics will know
When a singer is singing his verse,
It’s a true occupational curse!
A lyricist’s life is fulfilling,
But they learn to accept second billing.
