Jacopo Peri (20 August 1561 – 12 August 1633) wrote the earliest surviving opera.
Origins
Few of Peri’s pieces are still performed today, and even by the time of his death, his operatic style was looking rather old-fashioned when compared to the work of relatively younger reformist composers such as Claudio Monteverdi. – Wikipedia
Consider this: when you do something first,
You’re ipso facto best… but also worst.
And if you’re best, when others join the game,
You’ll likely lose the bragging rights you claim,
And then, in time, you will be superseded,
And you may find that you’re no longer needed.
A cautionary warning to the wary
That comes to mind when we consider Peri.
