Thomas Lupo the elder (baptised 7 August 1571 – probably December 1627) was an English composer and viol player.

In 1588 he joined the violin consort at the court of Queen Elizabeth I – he was only 16 – but evidently he was not paid for his service until 1591. Thomas retained this position, or variants thereof, for his entire life. -- Wikipedia
Whenas thou worketh for the Queen
And thou art merely aged sixteen,
It shouldst be no surprise to thee
That thou must do thy job for free.
For thou who learnest of the viol,
Must serve an internship and trial,
And then, methinks, when meetly trainéd
