August 16 - Madonna; Eydie Gormé (The Musical Birthday Series, 4th Annual Cycle)

Previous posts for August 16th are here: Madonna (2019), Heinrich Marschner (2020), and Al Hibbler (2021)

Madonna (b. 16 August 1958) is one of the most charismatic and influential pop stars of her generation.

In Nomine

Ciccone is pronounced /tʃɪˈkoʊni/ - per Wikipedia

Some thought that it was phony

When Madonna Louise Ciccone

     Decided on a mononymic name.

Though she suffered from the bias

Of the sanctified and pious,

She was worshiped as an icon, just the same.

Eydie Gormé (16 August 1928 – 10 August 2013) was an American singer who had hits on the pop and Latin pop charts. She sang solo and in the duo Steve and Eydie with her husband, Steve Lawrence.

Oldies But Goodies

"Eydie has been my partner on stage and in my life for more than 55 years. I fell in love with her the moment I saw her and even more the first time I heard her sing. -- Steve Lawrence, qtd. Wikipedia

When Lawrence (Steve) met Gormé (Eydie),

He fell in love and it was speedy.

The pair was young, perhaps naive:

Gormé (Eydie) and Lawrence (Steve),

They, nonetheless, kept love alive

Until she died at eighty-five.
