Franz Liszt (22 October 1811 – 31 July 1886) was a great piano virtuoso and an estimable composer.

If a pianist’s recital consists

In playing transcriptions of Liszt’s,

To meet his demands

They’ll need flexible hands,

But tendons like steel in their wrists.

(2)

As a part of his concert regime,

He would ask for a popular theme,

Then he’d vary the tune

Using passages strewn

With the technical cream of the cream.
