George Butterworth (12 July 1885 – 5 August 1916) was an English composer who was best known for the orchestral idyll The Banks of Green Willow and his song settings of A. E. Housman's poems from A Shropshire Lad.
In Memoriam
George Butterworth, a British son,
Died at Sommes in World War War,
And this is why I’ll stay away
From silly play on this, his day.
Singers, though, are always glad
To sing his songs from Shropshire Lad,
Which match the Housman brand of pity
With settings that are a rather pretty.
