Stephen Sondheim (b. 22 March 1930) is an American composer and lyricist primarily for the Broadway theater.

There are six limericks; phone users will need to scroll down to see them all.

Mixed Metaphor (A Funny thing Happened on the Way to the Forum)

Among the Sondheimian scores

This frolic with virgins and whores

Evinces that farce is

A kind of catharsis,

When comedy reigns ‘til it pours.

Sex in the City (Company)

“Should Company’s plot be updated?”

Is a question that’s hotly debated.

There are those who would lobby

For re-gendering Bobby,

With the couples more modernly mated.

Picture Perfect (Sunday in the Park with George)

If you’re out in the park with Seurat

And he suddenly bellows, “Aha!”,

It’s then that you’ll know

That he’s seen a tableau

Of the picturesque petty bourgeois.

I Wish (Into the Woods)

If you’re weighing the bads and the goods

In the story of Into the Woods,

You will find before long

There’s no right, there’s no wrong,

But plenty of woulds, shoulds, and coulds.

What’s on the Menu (Sweeney Todd)

Though the sight of cadavers is gruesome,

Mrs. Lovett decided to use some.

She fashioned meat tarts

From the tastiest parts --

I’m sure she would love to serve you some.

Amateur Theatricals (Director’s Dilemma)

When they’re planning the season, and you

Are in charge of amateur crew,

There’s always a pest

Who is quick to suggest,

“Let’s do a Steve Sondheim revue!”
