Perhaps a Piece of Mahler’s: Some Symphones

The Second

When Mahler held up for inspection,

A symphony new to his collection,

He averred, “For more aural

Excitement, it’s choral,

And it goes by the name “Resurrection.”

The Fifth: Adagietto

As his gondola plies the lagoon.

There’s an achingly beautiful tune;

And we share the despair

Felt by Aschenbach there,

In a mournful Mahlerian swoon.

The Eighth

Though the skeptics have thought him insane, he

Embarked on the Eighth with a “Veni.”

Still others have groused

That the excerpts from Faust

Are odd and excessively brainy.

In General

When Mahler sat down to compose,

He worked himself up into throes

Of musical passion,

‘Til haggard and ashen,

He needed a beer with the bros.
