Hugo Wolf (13 March 1860 – 22 February 1903) was one of the greatest composers of German art song.
Du holde Kunst, ich danke dir dafür!
Hugo Wolf, in songs, intended
To take a poem, already splendid,
And set it so the whole transcended
Routine things that middling men did.
And listeners, when the song had ended,
Felt that they had comprehended
Something mystic which ascended
To the realms that mystic Zen did.
