Julius Rudel (6 March 1921 – 26 June 2014) was an Austrian-born American opera and orchestral conductor. As Principal Conductor and General Director of the New York City Opera he brought the company international acclaim with his innovative programming.
Sarah Caldwell (March 6, 1924 – March 23, 2006) was an American opera conductor, impresario, and stage director. As head of the Opera Company of Boston she staged a wide range of operas and established a reputation for producing difficult works under pressure.
A Tale of Two Cities
Rudel in New York City,
And Caldwell in Boston, Mass.,
Cut to the nitty-gritty
On a shoe-string, but with class.
They didn’t ask for pity,
And wouldn’t take a pass,
While opera can be pretty,
It also needs some sass.

Oscar Straus (6 March 1870 – 11 January 1954) was a Viennese composer of operettas, film scores, and songs.
Underdog
A cheer for Oscar Straus, and yes,
That’s Oscar Straus with just one “s”,
Whose status in the opera house is
Lower than those other Strausses.
