Max Reger (19 March 1873 – 11 May 1916) was a German composer who had an unrivaled command of counterpoint and late Romantic chromaticism. Critical opinion varies as to whether this was for better or for worse.
Or…?
When reading through a Reger score
A pianist shook their head and swore,
“He’s much to eager to explore
Harmonic schemes not heard before,
And also believes that ‘more is more,’
While using sharps and flats galore.
This isn’t fun; this is a chore,
And I will give it up, therefore.”
A colleague said, “I think that you’re
Misjudging him; he’s not a bore,
And too important to ignore.
(The Germans think that he’s top drawer!)
So make you mind an open door
And soon you’ll find you have rapport.
Now get to work, explore, explore!
